FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short haul move?
This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.

What is a local move?
This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.

What is an intrastate move?
This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.

Why do you ask for my email address and phone number?
We require an email address and a valid phone number so our partner moving companies can contact you and quote your move.  Most companies will schedule a time to come to your location and write up an estimate on what your move will cost with that specific moving company.

What should I do with the food in my fridge?
You must empty your refrigerator before moving it, so we recommend transporting your food and other perishables in a cooler during your move.

What is a booking agent?
This is the agent you choose as your mover or the member of a van line that will coordinate all dates and services for your move.

How can I obtain a moving estimate?
You can phone or email your moving company or check to see if they offer a convenient online moving quote system.

Should I purchase valuation insurance?
Check with your homeowner’s insurance policy to see exactly what is covered. Depending on your particular policy, you may want to consider purchasing valuation insurance in case of damage during your move.

What is a high value article?
This refers to any items in a shipment that are valued at more than $100 per pound.

What is full-value coverage?
If you purchase this type of coverage, your moving company will either replace a damaged or lost item with an article of similar kind and value, pay you for the replacement cost, repair the item or pay you the cost of any necessary repairs.

What is a Bill of Lading?
This is an official contract between you and your moving company.

Does a moving company need to be licensed?
Moving companies are actually registered. This means the federal government has issued them a certificate of authority that allows them to move household goods in any of the 50 states. Local moving companies may also be registered with the US Department of Transportation to move interstate shipments within certain geographical areas.

What are bulky articles?
These refer to heavy items such as cars, snowmobiles, trailers or cars. Extra charges are usually applied because these items take up more space in the moving trucks/vans and require additional labour to load and unload.
